Why is jelly leaking from the jar?

5 ways to avoid leaks from jelly and builder gel jars

Something that can be frustrating is when jelly or gel leaks from its packaging. We've all experienced it at some point and the leak not only means loss of product, but also a messy and time-consuming mess to clean up.

But what is the real reason why this happens?

1. The packaging has been opened incorrectly

The most common reason why the gel leaks from the jar is because you pulled off the entire foil at once when you opened the package. The foil is there for a reason, to prevent leakage. Therefore, you should always only cut a hole in the middle of the foil. This not only helps prevent the package from leaking, it also catches the "jelly string" when you pick up product on the brush and it also protects against sanding dust getting into the product.

2. Improper storage

Another common reason for builder gel leaking is that the jar is not stored correctly. Builder gel is sensitive to temperature changes and if the jar is not stored in the right environment, this can affect the consistency and pressure in the jar. If it is stored in an environment that is too warm, the gel can become thinner, the pressure can increase in the package and thus leak more easily.

Make sure to store your builder gel in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight or heat sources such as radiators, windows and the like.

3. Product has been wiped off on the edge with the brush

It is actually enough that the edge of the jar has been used to pull off the product when you have taken out the jelly or that a little product has ended up in the lid. When the jar is left to stand for a while, the gel will start to migrate down the length of the packaging and what looked so little feels significantly more once it has ended up under the jar. The heat in the room will also make the gel thinner in consistency, so it can happen quite quickly once the product has ended up outside its packaging.

4. The lid has not been screwed on properly

As previously stated, the gel is affected by temperature changes. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to ensure that the lid is screwed on completely. If the lid is screwed on slightly crookedly, there is a risk of leakage when there is a small gap to get through.

5. The packaging has broken

If the jar or lid is cracked, there is a high risk of leakage. Cracks can occur for many different reasons, such as if it has been dropped or the lid has been screwed on incorrectly. If this happens, you should scoop the gel into a new, tightly sealed jar.

So what do you do if the product has already leaked? How do you clean it?

Use a cleaner, wipe off, isopropyl alcohol or disinfectant spray to dissolve the sticky surface. Remember to always wear plastic gloves so that the product does not come into contact with your skin!
