How do you create a good apex?
How to build the perfect apex is always a big question when it comes to nail extensions.
So what exactly is an apex? This is the highest point on the nail, usually located about a third of the way from the cuticle to the free edge of the nail. The apex gives the nail its strength and durability, as well as a natural and aesthetically pleasing shape. Below we explain the basics of why you should learn how to build an apex:
- The apex acts as a support pillar that helps distribute pressure evenly across the entire nail, reducing the risk of the nail breaking or being damaged.
- By placing the apex correctly, you can create a strong and durable nail without it needing to be too thick or chunky.
- A well-placed apex mimics the natural curve of a natural nail, giving a more authentic look. A properly shaped apex helps balance the shape of the nail, making it look proportionate and aesthetically pleasing.
- The apex is usually placed one third of the way from the cuticle towards the free edge of the nail, but the exact location may vary depending on the shape and length of the nail.
- Both builder gel and acrylic can be used to create the apex. The process involves applying a thicker layer of material to the apex area and then shaping and smoothing it to create a soft curve.
- The apex is especially important for nail extensions, but it can also be used to reinforce natural nails that need extra support.
- When re-filling nails, it is important to reshape and restore the apex to maintain the strength and shape of the nail.
How do you build an apex?
- Apply a thin layer of builder gel all over the nail and do not harden it completely (it should still be sticky).
- Take a larger ball of gel and place it in the middle of the nail where the apex should be. Gently press the gel ball against the cuticle without the gel touching the skin or cuticle. Then, in a sweeping motion, pull the gel side to side without releasing the contact between the brush and the gel until you reach the tip of the nail.
- Use a thin brush to smooth the gel and create a smooth transition from the apex to the edges of the nail. Turn your hand upside down for a few seconds to let gravity help shape the apex before curing.
